Multifocal Technology

Like your appearance and the rest of the body, the eyes and vision can change with aging. Cataracts develop when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, brown or yellow as protein in the lens breaks down, liquefies, and begins to clump. Presbyopia is a common age-related condition in which the lens hardens and becomes less flexible, reducing the ability of the eye to shift from far to near and vice versa.

Fortunately, advanced technology provides state-of-the-art procedures for age-related eye conditions. Dr. Nemi at Lotus Vision in Alpharetta, Georgia performs eye surgery using multifocal technology to remove cataracts and correct presbyopia in one safe, outpatient procedure.

What Is Multifocal Technology in Eye Surgery?

In a cataract removal procedure, the cloudy natural lens is surgically removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) that allows clearer, sharper images to reach the retina. Multifocal technology provides a wide range of premium intraocular lenses that offer a broader range of vision, both near and at a distance. In many cases, multifocal technology can reduce or remove the need for glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery.

What Types of Multifocal Lenses Are Used in Cataract Surgery?

We are a boutique eye clinic, providing custom-tailored treatments and superior, compassionate service to our patients. From a selection of premium intraocular lenses, Dr. Nemi will choose the best multifocal replacement lens to suit your needs.

Symfony IOL

Symfony is the first and only extended depth of focus, presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens. After cataract surgery using Symfony multifocal technology, many patients experience clear, high quality vision at any distance, near or far.

The Symfony IOL combines two technologies to create superior vision:

  • Elongates the focus of the eye for continuous high-quality vision.
  • Corrects color distortion (technically known as chromatic aberration) for sharp vision in all lighting conditions.

This type of intraocular lens is available as a monofocal IOL to restore vision in one area focus, usually distance. Patients who have this lens implanted during cataract surgery may need glasses for near and intermediate distances after the procedure. Symfony also offers an extended depth of focus IOL to provide high-quality vision in a continuous range from near to far, reducing or removing the need to wear glasses.

The ability to see in dim light can expand when and where you are able to engage in certain activities. After cataract surgery with a Symfony IOL, you may be significantly more comfortable with low-light activities, such as driving at night, walking at dusk, or seeing a movie in a theater.

Tecnis Multifocal IOL

Most men and women over the age of 60 experience some degree of blurred vision caused by cataracts. Nearly everyone over the age of 50 has trouble reading without glasses because of presbyopia. The Tecnis multifocal lens makes it possible to regain vision as you may have had in your younger days.

Using advanced surgical techniques, Dr. Nemi can remove natural eye lenses clouded with cataracts and replace them with Tecnis multifocal lenses. This procedure has helped many people gain independence from corrective eyewear. The manufacturer of Tecnis reports that nine out of 10 patients have freedom from glasses after Tecnis multifocal lenses are placed in cataract surgery.

Age-related vision problems can get in the way of many activities, such as sightseeing, golfing, boating, reading, sewing, quilting, and surfing the internet. Cataract surgery with the Tecnis multifocal lens has helped many men and women improve their vision and quality of life.

Custom-Tailored Cataract Surgery with Multifocal Technology

In a custom-tailored treatment plan for cataracts, Dr. Nemi at Lotus Vision can implant a multifocal intraocular lens to improve vision at a wide range of distances. This technology works best when an IOL is implanted in both eyes. Dr. Nemi, your cataract surgeon in Atlanta, Georgia, skillfully performing both laser cataract surgery and phacoemulsification – a technique that uses an ultrasound device to break up and remove cataracts.

Cataracts should be removed if age-related vision loss is interfering with your normal daily activities, such as reading, computer use, or driving a car. Multifocal technology in cataract surgery can be used to treat your cataracts and presbyopia, improving your vision both near and far. After a consultation and careful evaluation, Dr. Nemi can recommend the best cataract removal procedure and the best multifocal intraocular lens for you.
